I am a social scientist with a particular interest in creative methods, community arts, health, wellbeing and policy. My PhD was in the use of photography as a research method and the interpretation of visual images. This led to a fascination I have with the arts, humanities and culture as forms of knowledge and evidence about people’s lives, histories and communities. My current project explores this idea in a post-industrial town in the South Wales valleys and aims to look at how policy makers might consider evidence produced through the arts and humanities in the policy making process.
I have strong links to my own community and am Chair of Adamsdown Arts Association (A3) in my spare time. As we are a grass-roots arts group, we work very closely with artists, schools, Communities First and other community groups to deliver participatory arts projects in our local area. A3 is very close to my heart and I feel privileged to be able to combine what I do professionally with my hobby. In particular it has encouraged me to explore the value of non-tangible aspects of heritage and culture.
I am also interested in Arts and Health, and am on the Management Committee for Making Minds, an arts and mental health organisation in South Wales. In particular, I am interested in creative forms of evaluation for arts-based interventions and the use of non-numeric methods to produce credible forms of evidence.
